What is a veneer?

Various types of fillings should not be seen solely as ways to improve our appearance and well-being. Each of them, besides beautifying, serves a role that can generally be described as protecting the teeth. Veneers belong to these treatments. What is a veneer? It is a thin plate made of ceramic, porcelain, or composite material (used temporarily), attached to the surface of the tooth from its front (labial) side.

When considering getting veneers, we usually think first about improving appearance. Veneers are a good solution. They are durable, do not harm teeth, and do not discolor if properly cared for. Proper hygiene ensures long-lasting use. Their thickness ranges from 0.4 to 0.8 mm. Thicker veneers are used when they are also meant to correct various dental imperfections. Composite veneers are applied in one visit, while more durable ones require longer preparation. Veneers remain slightly translucent, so it is beneficial if they are combined with other aesthetic procedures such as whitening.

Why and for whom are veneers used?

Teeth become whiter and straighter all at once. The primary role of veneers is aesthetics, but they also provide protection for the tooth. They are considered helpful in cases where there are too large gaps between teeth, as they can improve their shape. Veneers can be used when natural teeth are too short, a tooth is chipped with a visible fracture, or when fillings on the tooth differ in color from the tooth itself. They help not only in dental treatment but, when used long-term, also contribute to the overall improvement of tooth condition.

The only significant contraindications are intense teeth grinding, thin natural enamel, or serious bite defects. Veneers are classified as fillings in dentistry and are minimally invasive compared to other techniques, but this does not mean they have no impact on teeth. During preparation for the procedure, between 3% and 30% of the tooth tissue may be removed. Therefore, veneers are best applied to healthy teeth that have not undergone major treatments. The way the tooth is prepared affects both the durability of the veneer and the aesthetic result.

However, dentistry has introduced an alternative — veneers that cover the entire tooth, only 0.2 mm thick. These are applied without grinding.

Other techniques of aesthetic fillings in dentistry include prosthetic crowns, which are ceramic covers placed over the teeth, covering them completely. They are used when a tooth has suffered significant damage and looks unattractive. Like with veneers, the tooth must be ground down, unfortunately to a much greater extent. A crown not only restores the natural appearance of the tooth but also strengthens it.

Inlay and Onlay

To improve the appearance of teeth, ceramic fillings can be applied on the "top" of the tooth, in the so-called cusps, referred to as inlays and onlays. These fillings are used when tooth cavities are large because they allow for the reconstruction of the tooth without the need for more invasive methods.
