INHALATION SEDATION - LAUGHING GAS

What is sedation?

Nitrous oxide inhalation sedation sounds like the name of a serious procedure, and it is as much as the use of laughing gas (anesthetic). It doesn't work as anesthesia because it doesn't make the pain during the procedure completely disappear. And that's not its role: the application of laughing gas is primarily intended to influence the patient's attitude, relax him and lower his sense of fear. The use of laughing gas is intended not only to improve the mood of a patient who is badly frightened by the procedure, but also to facilitate the work of the doctor, who, after all, cares that the patient should cooperate with him as much as possible, and preferably in the most friendly atmosphere.

Why sedation?

Nitrous oxide sedation is not just a way for the doctor to make the patient's time more pleasant, but a way for the dentist to control what happens in the office during the procedure. The behavior of the patient, especially an adult and stressed patient, but also a child, can be influenced in this way. While the gas is in effect, the sensation of pain is reduced (although it does not disappear) and the person becomes insensitive to smells, sounds and touch. The patient may even forget the entire procedure.

Children versus inhalation sedation.

The case of a child is special in that he makes decisions (sic!), expresses feelings and reacts differently than an adult. An adult, even if the procedure was eminently unpleasant for him, may put other rationales above his feelings. In the case of a child, his feelings are often of paramount importance, including to his parents. A child is more willing to undergo dental procedures when he can make his choice of a strawberry- or bubble gum-scented mask in a friendly manner, and even laugh in the chair! Sedation becomes fun and a prelude to successful dental work. It works on children regardless of previous experience in cooperation with the doctor.

Laughing gas.

The term laughing gas is also a bit of a simplification, so it is better with this treatment to just talk about nitrous oxide (with oxygen), the name of which is not misleading. A person under its influence
is indeed more cheerful, but this agent has a primarily intoxicating effect. Under its influence, the patient can, colloquially speaking, "relax", "drift off", lose consciousness (not consciousness!) and not quite know what is happening to him. This state is pleasant for children and adults, but it does not cause loss of control over body reflexes.
The term inhalation sedation, on the other hand, is a description of the action. Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide has an effect after just 30 seconds: the nitrous oxide itself is completely removed from the body through breathing. There are no adverse health effects in healthy patients. It does not cause respiratory or circulatory problems. In medicine, a distinction is made between shallow and deep sedation types and types: oral, pharmacological and just inhalation. Inhalation sedation belongs to the shallow type. The duration of effect of nitrous oxide is a maximum of about 30 minutes.

When is sedation recommended?

It is indicated that it is good to use this type of treatment in children with ADHD, nervous hyperactivity or those who may react with vomiting in stressful situations. In adults determined to have treatments that cause stress, fright or simple uncertainty, manifested by postponing troublesome dental visits "for later". Laughing gas is gladly used by dentists working with children and dental surgeons. Whenever a patient wishes to use nitrous oxide, and there are no contraindications, it can be used successfully.

Inhalation sedation, of course, has other positive benefits besides making the doctor's job easier during a specific procedure. It reduces the feeling of stress and can have a therapeutic effect. The use of gas at each visit of a particular patient can change his attitude towards dental treatment in general.

Contraindications
for inhalation sedation

  • rhinitis
  • sinusitis
  • middle ear
  • multiple sclerosis and emphysema
The procedure should also be avoided by pregnant women, especially during the first months of pregnancy.
