Periodontics

Only a few percent of the adults have entirely healthy gums. A significant percentage suffers from different types of disorders which may be reflected in bleeding, hypersensitiveness, bad smell. We do not experience inconvenience due to many of these disorders and as a result ignore them and live a normal life. Taking care of our teeth is what we associate exclusively with brushing, cleaning and treatments guaranteeing healthy and esthetic smile. Hence, we deal only with organs (teeth) protruding over gums, disregarding their environment. Dentistry is also misunderstood as a field of medicine which describes treatment of what is most visible – teeth indeed. In the meantime, dentists deal with the whole oral cavity, diagnosing its condition and curing the existing high quantity of diseases and disorders. Alternatively, taking care of teeth health must not be associated only to themeselves but gums and the whole paradontium as well, including even the tongue. The teeth condition is often a result of many different factors, many of which affect the base of the teeth – paradontium – and not the teeth themselves. Teeth remain in their appropriate position thanks to the group of tissues determiend as paradontium (latin: periodontium), hence the science name and subfields of dentistry dealing with its abnormalities – periodontology.
What we see from the outside – a gum, is only one out of the whole group of tissues assisting in maintainig teeth – inside the teeth we will discover periodontium, tooth cement and dental process. Each of these tissues must be in good condition because impairment of any of them can be dangerous for our teeth. At first, settlement of teeth is impaired which leads to falling out of the tooth, if the problem has not been cured. Paradontium maintains, surrounds and therefore protects our teeth from infections – it constitutes their shield. After all, oral cavity is an environment where almost 600 different bacterial species and other microorganisms reside. When they stick to gums and/or penetrate inside the paradontium, they constitute a major threat. Redness, pus, bleeding are often signs of serious problems, which, uncured, may lead to periodontosis, which is the result of inflammation induced by the sediment formed due to the adverse effect of microorganisms – in the point of contact between the tooth and the gum, this sediment hardenes and transforms into tartar (tooth scale). It is worth to remember that the loss of tooth is only one of the effects of paradontium diseases, they may cause other complications, affecting the whole body: speeding the development of atherosclerosis, leading to miscarriage, affecting the respiratory system. Hence, the danger originates not only in the impairment of the enamel but also the whole environment in the oral cavity.
As said before, periodontology is a field of dentistry dealing with examination of paradontium, treatment of its diseases, standing in line not only with natural teeth but also implants which must be well fixed as well as and properly interact with the human body. An appointment at the periodontist is usually preceded by the appointment at the dentist who prepares the patient for treatment, cleaning off teeth, among the others, the tooth scale, which can lead to many complications. The periodontist may perform also surgeries such as regeneration of impaired tissues, removal of a root part (resection) or tissue graft, eg. around the implants to fix them strongly. Periodontics is also prophylaxis, including sand blasting (supragingival and subgingival), among the others. Consequently, periodontics means healthy base of the tooth, its constant protection and strong setting in the dental process.
